The project objective was to replace the washed-away Sand River Bridge which served as the only access route to Cape St Francis and St Francis Bay areas. The original bridge consisted of a triple barrel pre-cast concrete culvert structure. The new bridge has an enlarged hydraulic opening, with up- and downstream scour protection and headwalls, which resolves the primary reason for the collapse of the previous structure. Main elements of construction include demolition of previous structure, new asphalt roadway, in-situ cast reinforced concrete culvert structures and bridge deck, pedestrian walkways, fencing and the rehabilitation of the landscape.
